Really Budget Fashion!

Tuesday, April 06, 2010

I do love dressing up - I always have, from the time I was a little girl - but I am amazed at how much some find to spend on their clothes! I read blogs where "budget" pieces are $20 or so - whereas I specialize in the under-$10-thriftshop items! I have 2 things I could like that I saw on the internet - but at $25 each, I don't know how I will manage....

BUT we went to a Goodwill in a neighborhood we don't usually frequent & they had a SALE on dresses - at $3 each - so I bought FIVE. Now I have a navy wrap around, a grey knit dress (from the GAP, looks brand new), a pretty summer print, and a navy romper that I will probably wear as a top - oh, and another  knit top/dress - also probably to be worn over pants.  And I picked up some vintage jewelry - some clip earrings for $6 each, too.

The real buy of the day was an '80s vintage kerry green linen blazer - off a vintage shop's sale rack for $.99!! - I wore it for Easter with a print knit dress I had found - & the saffron scarve I had also bought at the Goodwill for $2.99 - and green tweed thrift shop pumps (new or like new)- (with the green designer purse a friend had given me a year or so ago....he had gotten it as a freebie!) All thrift shop stuff - & perhaps the whole OUTFIT was about $25!!  So you see when ONE piece is $25, it's hard for me!

Hubby thinks I am extravagent when I buy $48 worth of clothes at a thrift shop!  Oh, what a cheap fashionista I am!!

Also found some non-brand name skin care products at Sally's Beauty Supply - Because one brand was on sale 2 for 1, I got 4 products for $30 - about what ONE item could cost for the equivalent. So remember to check out Sally's for off-name brand skin care! There are some good buys out there.  Frankly, I forget about Sally's - I just was windowshopping at a strip mall while hubby ran another errand!

Also found an Ann Klein designer tote bag for $7 or so at a Goodwill a week or so ago - which is now my day-to-day bag, and the leopard print is retired until the fall.

I am so used to getting along on a starvation budget for my wardrobe, I get dizzy when I think of paying REAL prices, which, what with inflation, seem astronomical to me.  I remember $15 silk print dress on the sale rack at a 5th Ave. department store....

I just ran into a quote from Helen Gurley Brown saying that to be well-dressed, a woman has to have a LOT of clothes - I certainly find that to be the case - even in my ueber-casual lifestyle....
