Hubby & I are getting the CHEAPEST tix to hear some classical art songs by a famous singer tonite at Disney Hall.  They still cost us almost $50! I have 2 more years until I qualify for the senior discount....& pundits wonder why there isn't more audience - it's the $$$$ stupid!

Because live music is terrific & I crave it, I signed up for the concert calendars of the 2 local music schools (you might do the same with a college or university in your town).  Some of the concerts are actually FREE - & I found a nice Fr. Noel concert on 12/3 GRATIS.  We both <3 going to the Hollywood Bowl -- so I am going to make an effort to hear live music MORE.

I do like to dress up for outings like concerts - I have a dress I bought with a $10 coupon at Target which I don't think I have had on - & I am going to pair it with my $8 Ferragamo shoes & my @$10-15 Ferre purse, I bought in a funky antique store.

The shoes are worth a TON - & I looked up Ferre & discovered it's Italian & a similar new purse would be $300-400!!! Gee. I just appreciated the good leather & the classic style.

It made me realize all of a sudden how many very nice things I DO HAVE.  All acquired at a very small percentage of what they would be retail! $7 designer shoes & the same for large silk scarves - & even my Michael Kors handbag! Also my $8 London Fog trench coat in iridescent midnight blue - which I am getting more wear out of that I thought I would...I love that coat!!!

It's all a collection that I have amassed over the years - & you know, it was FUN doing it, too.  It seems we will have the rich folks around for the conceivable future - so we will all be able to GLEAN our goodies from their castoffs & donations! Isn't that comforting?

Out Shopping
Sunday, November 21, 2010

Had an audition in Burbank - which is close, but we never seem to get there....so as it was Saturday, hubby & I decided to make a day of it. I waited to read & hubby went across the street to a sports bar that had every game under the sun on its various monitors! (He had coffee.)

Once I finished, we walked up to the street leading to the Burbank Center mall - and lo and behold there was a $1 bookstore there!  Both hubby & I bought books - some for Xmas presents, some just for us. I managed to sneak 2 books for hubby to the cash register without him seeing! I will add those to the 2 adventure books I bought discounted at Barnes & Noble. Hubby is hard to shop for...

A few doors down there was WASTELAND, a high end vintage store (I have sold things to them) - Whew everything is PRISTINE  & VERY EXPENSIVE.  I saw boots like the ones I bought years ago in an Army/Navy store in England for hundreds of dollars! I liked a lot of the pieces - but I am very low end - the reason I love shopping for vintage up in Ventura - there it's straight from the owner to the thriftshop - without the markup!

New, the boots I already possess would cost hundreds of dollars, too! I just buy them & when they are in fashion, bring them out.  The Army/Navy boots are from the 70's!

It's always instructive for me to walk through a store like Macy's & show hubby the price tags.  He is confounded that handbags can cost $300! Then I remind him why I snap up similar styles an designers at thriftshops whenever I come across them.  The Michael Kors tote I bought recently would be $200+ new & I bought it for $7??

We walked over to IKEA, as Mark likes to make a trip around Xmas time.  Again, I was astounded at the prices of the laminate furniture. I remarked to hubby that the Scandinavian birch veneer computer desk would be hundreds of dollars here in IKEA, and we spent $30 on it at the Salvation Army!  Then there was the birch?? veneer little side table I picked up off the street over in the Valley.  Hubby fixed it up for me & now it's a printer table. (I hated the one we had. It was veneer - but that hideous cheap dark stuff...)  That table would be at least 50-90 bucks at IKEA.  And who would know the difference?

I do like Ikea for small things, and we bought a little black lantern to replace the one that broke in the boat - and a paper lantern to put over the fixture in the bedroom - somehow.  And then they had a special on frozen meatballs + potatoes + cream sauce, which we treated ourselves with - plus a jar of lingon berries & some plaid napkins to give to my brother....

You have to buy bags there at Ikea - but their blue plastic bags with handles are a steal at $.59 each - so we didn't mind.

All in all, we spent the afternoon wandering around - windowshopping & really not spending much $.  There were a lot of people around, though & I don't think I am going to go to a mall now until after Xmas, unless I absolutely HAVE to - as I hate crowds.

Gotta say that I was disappointed that NO ONE responded for the CARMEX giveaway - but I have the items right here to send out, so here's your second chance - I will wait a few weeks & then just give them to somebody....Just email me at pamphyila@yahoo.com with your name & address.  Does NO ONE actually read this blog?  That's disappointing.

Have a great Thanksgiving.  We are dining with a bunch of our friends....

At the moment I am wearing @ jersey knit scarves - One is from the 99 Cent Store & the other has a label from American Eagle Outfitters (which I bought @ a thriftshop).  They are both striped (one grey + raspberry - the other grey + charcoal) & around 8" wide & look better together than apart.  Frugal Style!

Using my thriftshop Michael Kors tote a LOT! You can put a lot in it.  Still haven't broken out the Clarins red lipstick sampler I got recently.

Four free magazines arrived yesterday in the mail.  I went through the old ones and sent off several bags with hubby to his school for art projects.  Recycle those old magazines! Gee, If I had bought them at retail, they would have cost a FORTUNE!   Just signed up for a guitar magazine for hubby....

Of course, lotion samples & shampoo keep on coming....

Freebies do brighten up my day.

HEY - SEND ME AN EMAIL AT pamphyila@yahoo.com TO BE ENTERED INTO THE CARMEX GIVEAWAY TO HAVE THEM SEND YOU SOME NICE PRODUCTS!!! (vERY FEW ENTRIES, SO THE CHANCES ARE GOOD TO WIN!)

An outing
Wednesday, November 03, 2010

My buddy Eldon finally got to take me out to dinner for my birthday - we went to the Acupolco restaurant which has the advantages of nice margaritas, a pretty decor, access to coupons & lots of free parking! I was very good & avoided the fresh taco chips!

As the weather is so peculiar, I got to wear my "new" vintage dress I got last week from Salvation Army in Pasadena for $5.  It's a shift made out of rather sturdy 50's/60's cotton & is in a hot pink/black batik pattern.  I love batik! The interesting thing is that it had been altered at one point to make the shift less billowy.  I had to adjust the armholes so they wouldn't be too tight. No big deal.

Actually what whoever altered it did made me think of doing something similar with the sleeves of another batik dress (this one dark green/brown/purple) I got ALSO for $5 last week.  I think I will alter the sleeves from their present boxy shape - & make them more flattering.  Easy enough to do.

It's hard to figure out what to WEAR in S. Cal. when it's November & in the 80's!! I chose dark patterns in light fabrics - so the cotton batik is perfect. I also got a chance to use my "new" thriftshop Michael Kors purse (also $5!!!) & had to boast to my frugal friends what a bargain it had been.

After dinner we went off to an All Saints Day mass where they sang a Saint-Saens mass - & the air was filled with frankcense.  I had had a trying day, which I don't want to bore you with - so the service was just what the doctor ordered!

Don't forget your local place of worship for some nice live music! Churches are a major support for musicians in the U.S. -

Hey - SIGN UP FOR MY CARMEX GIVEAWAY - by emailing me at pamphyila@yahoo.com by  15 !!!!!

Oh, & I couldn't resist showing you some vintage anti-suffragette propaganda  - You all did VOTE, didn't you? This reminds us that at one time we COULDN'T...

#1 Thanks for all the nice feedback.  Begonia - your reading group sounds wonderful! So many kids could benefit from that sort of concept.  my husband is restricted by the Calif. standards, which can be a pain in the neck & I don't think the kids are any smarter somehow.  He has kids with special needs reading text books that would have been advanced for me in high school.  As I recall in 6th grade we were memorizing rivers and lists of products from countries! And this is still considering that so many kids here are Eng. language learners....for them it's vocabulary in all their courses, which the teachers don't get.  My brother, Rick Munro has had great success in Bakersfield in history with lots of emphasis on TERMS...& as for most language learning - ugh!!

#2 CARMEX has made me part of their blog squad!! & they sent me a very nice packages of all their new products, as they are developing the brand beyond the lip balms we know....

They even have a tinted lip ultra hydrating lip balm - which I really like - very moisturizing. (Altho the colors are very muted - great for growing girls, I would think.) And the new healing cream is also a winner....I use it to moisturize my hands & it actually works very well - better than 95% of the other creams I have used....

#3 A GIVEAWAY!!!!

Carmex is nice enough to sponsor a giveaway for my readers - Do you hear that out there???Just email me at pamphyila@yahoo.com before 11/14 - with CARMEX in the heading with your name & address & I will put your names in a hat & send the winner off to Carmex & THEY will send off some Carmex product(s) to you!!

I don't normally do this - but occasionally being a blogger has its benefits! We will see how it goes. Life continues to be an adventure.
