Blog: Do I have a Green Thumb?

I'm trying to be green and garden too.

Trip to the Heritage Farm
Friday, August 31, 2007

We took our son and my in-laws to the local Heritage Farm recently. What a wonderful place to teach children about the ways of the past. The farm animals are great to see as well.

Cheers

Our wedding on a local beach
Wednesday, April 18, 2007

In the summer of 2004, my husband and I got married at our favorite local beach. With permission, we set up seating and props and had the wedding of a lifetime! It was the most beautiful wedding location. I'm not just saying it because it was free to have our wedding at the local beach, it was perfect for us. There were waves as the back drop and the sun was setting making pictures look fablous. I would suggest it to anyone who loves the outdoors and has a favorite local beach. Who needs to travel down south to get married!!!!!

Just got my veggie garden plotted
Monday, April 16, 2007

Here in Nova Scotia on Sunday the weather was quite nice so my family and I got outdoors and plotted our veggie garden. I had been waiting all winter to get started. I just love to get in there and get dirty!

We've added some manure and soil so it will be extra fertile this year. Hoping to plant carrots, peas, beans, beets, zucchini and tomatoes. Very excited to get it planted. Unfortunately, my camera is on the blitz. No pics yet.

Happy Spring.

Did you know
Thursday, April 12, 2007

Here in Canada our large grocery store chains are now selling a reuseable grocery bag made from recycled plastic bottles and some fabric fibres. The bags are very inexpensive and are very attractive to use daily . Its a good feeling to be reducing the amount of waste, one bag at at time. I actually took my bag to the mall and used it last night! If your grocery store chain doesn't sell them yet. Inquire....

I'm getting Spring Fever
Tuesday, March 27, 2007

I've just been to the mall to do my Easter Shopping and have caught the Spring Fever.

Spring Fever for me is craving greenery. I then have to surround myself with plants and seeds to start my garden. I just bought chive and beautiful velvet sunflower seeds.

I can't wait to plant them. The birds love sunflowers and my son will love watching them grow as well.

A gotta see...
Wednesday, March 21, 2007

I just had the opportunity to a viewing of Sharkwater by Canadian film writer and film-maker Rob Stewart.

This documentary is an eye-opener. Everyone should see it!

We need to boycott the meaningless hunting of shark for their fins.

Open for discussion.....

A Burning Issue....
Sunday, March 11, 2007

Lights on... Lights off...

I've recently noticed my family members leaving lights on in rooms that are not in use.

It is so simple to just flick the switch on the way out of the room. So why can't they remember? I think of the money savings and that is all I need to do to flick the switch on the way out of a room.

Are you and/or your family members in the same situation. Let me know how you combat this "burning issue".

Thanks

Tide's cold water commercial
Wednesday, March 07, 2007

Hey there,

Have you seen Tide's Cold Water Tide commercial. The commercial discusses the fact that many of us use hot or warm water to wash our clothing. This uses more energy, is more expensive and isn't even necessary. Spread the word- Clothes can be cleaned in cold water! Just ask Tide.

Composting
Monday, March 05, 2007

Here in Canada we have a composting program where we compost organic waste. We use a large plastic green cart to store organic waste outdoors and a small plastic green box to transport organic waste to the large green cart each day. The contents of the green cart are picked up by a compost truck every two weeks in the winter and every week in the summer. All organic wastes are transported to a processing facility where they are processed and composted.

Composting can become a second nature process in a household with time. It is possible to even enjoy if a personal composter is used for creating ones own gardening compost.

Please visit The Halifax Regional Municipality, "Naturally Green" website for more information on composting and green carts.
