I cleaned the counters with TSP (available at any hardware store) and water. After they dried completely, I applied a coat of primer. Click on photo for my info.

Another angle. See the hideous red shelf in the background, the one with the black microwave? It has served as a catchall for everything and always looks messy. Years ago The-Person-I-Shall-Not-Name, who isn't me, put fake bricks on it, but only half way down. I racked my brain on what the heck to do with it, but came up short. I have since torn it down and will soon rebuild it--better, stronger, faster--and less ugly.
