Candy Bar Calories
Thursday, August 17, 2006
30 minutes on my elliptical trainer burns between 350 to 400 calories. When you consider that there are candy bars that contain nearly that many calories it really makes me think twice before eating calorie heavy snacks. Fred Meyer regularly has 4 for $1 deals on candy bars, they are easier to pass up when you consider how long you have to spend exercising to burn it off.

Weight loss effort

Dear Fisher: I have been reading your journal on your exercise/weightloss program. I applaude your efforts! It's not easy starting and then continuing a program such as yours.
If I may add some simple, yet effective advice to your diet...NEVER MIX COMPLEX CARBS WITH FATS IN A FOUR HOUR PERIOD. EVER. With every meal, you want to eat protein. (How much depends on your BMI and activity level.) For breakfast, eat PROTEIN and FATS only. (No carbs.) Have all the steak and eggs you want! For lunch and dinner, you may eat 15 g of complex carbs with your protein choice. You may have all the green vegetables you want all day long. You may have 2 choices - 15 g's each - of fruit each day. (The carbs found in fruits and green vegetables are NOT considered complex carbs.)
When losing weight, stay away from bananas, corn, carrots, milk and cheese products. These have way too much sugar in them. Once you get to your goal weight, you can start to slowly add these foods back into your diet. Be sure to take a multi-vitamin every day.
It's a simple rule when you think about it - No fats and carbs should ever mix in a four hour period. The human body is a natural fat-burning machine. However, the minute you eat complex carbs with fats, the body stops burning fat and STORES it, and will then turn it's attention to burning off the carbs. (Hence, weight gain.) You can exercise until you're blue in the face and won't lose much weight (if at all) if you don't follow that one, simple rule. This is why people get discouraged with their diets and quit a program.
Now, I'm not advertising never to eat complex carbohydrates because your body needs them. Just be smart as to what you mix them with. If you want a piece of bread for lunch or dinner, that's fine. Just don't put butter on it. (Or anything else that contains fat grams.) If you want spaghetti, make sure you have a no fat sauce in it. Start buying buffalo meat (if you're not a vegetarian) instead of beef because there's no fat in buffalo. In the refrigerator section of your supermarket, buy some I Can't Believe it's not Butter in the SPRAY BOTTLE, not the tub. It has no fats or carbs in it so it's perfect to put on bread and vegetables.
Don't worry so much about calories. Start counting fats, carbs and protein grams instead. You'll be amazed at how the weight will fall off if you can adjust your eating habits to what I outlined above.
I, too, have battled with my weight for years. I have a good friend who is a body builder and trainer. He told me this simple rule three months ago. I lost 32 lbs in three months! Why haven't I ever been able to do this before? Because I mixed complex carbs and fats. That was the only thing I changed in my eating habits. Since I don't know what your eating habits are, only you can assess the changes you'll have to make if you want to take the above council.
Good luck! Keep up the good work!

Very interesting strategy. Thanks for posting it! I will definately consider your advice. I am not a big meat eater which makes a lot of the carb strategies difficult for me.
