Food Business Recycling

Friday, March 06, 2009

Greetings,

In my small town we have recycle bins for paper, plastic milk jugs, tin & aluminum cans, and glass. Food service paper is not recyclable there. We rinse and sort these items and take them to the town bins, and the rest goes in the garbage.

The food scraps go to chickens. The coffee skins and grounds go to the compost pile. I'm looking for ideas to do more.

don't forget food pantries

In my neighborhood the coffee houses have bagels, cakes, and cookies to go with the coffee. As the baked goods get old, they are donated to food pantries where they are appreciated.

Since you are running a coffee shop, if people often take coffee to go you can encourage patrons to bring in their own reusable mug? The grinds can be used for gardening in the spring too. This is a neat site with ideas too: http://www.awarenessideas.com/
