How to save with a new (to us) house!
Thursday, July 19, 2007
Tomorrow is the big day! Michael did the final walk-through of our new home with the realtor this morning and everything looks great! We close on the house tomorrow morning at 10am! I can't wait!
I have some wonderful friends (thanks a million Angie, Amy, and The Rex's!) and family who are helping us move and have given us a lawn mower and have given us a great deal on a used washer and dryer, and are helping us to move all of our stuff!
Now, I need some help. Now, with all of the new costs of living in our own house, I'm going to need some super tips on how we can be frugal and still save money each month even with all of our new expenses. If you have any great tips on how your family saves money every month (in ANY area, groceries, utilities, decorations, etc...)
We'll move the appliances and lots of boxes into the house this weekend. Next weekend we'll officially move our big stuff like beds and bookshelves and furniture and be permanently at our new address! It will be a long week of anticipation!!
I can't wait for all of us this to come together tomorrow and we'll actually have the keys! I look forward to hearing your great frugal money-saving tips!! ;-)
Sincerely, Carrie
PS.. check out Max our new kitten! We seem to acquire a new animal every time we move!! He's really cute and super sweet!!

I am very happy for you, and by the way your kitten is adorable! Here are my top money saving tips: I have a very clean house that I get complimented for again and again, and it costs me pennies to do. My secret? The only cleaners you really need are a basic soap) like dishsoap (I actually use a grated ivory bar soap), vinegar, and baking soda. That's it. What one won't clean, one of the others will. It is also great to know my house is toxin free and I am helping the environment. Decorating: remember a house is to be a home not a object to show off. In other words, make it comfy and pleasant for you and don't worry about what others think. Decorate in a way that feels good. Use beloved photos, mementos and other things that you all ready have. Just about anything can deocate a home if it is balanced (does not clash too much or clutter) and makes you happy. Window treatments can be a killer expense. My solution? Wall hooks and flat bed sheets that match the color of the room. I originally got this idea from an interior decorator and it looks lovely! Just make a swag from one hook to the next across the top of your window. Flat sheets also make great table cloths. Again, use what you have to decorate. If you don't really have that much I suggest some fun thrift store and yard sale shopping. Also, paint makes a huge difference in a room and it is inexpensive. And lastly, watch those utilities! Be wary of just how much electricity, water etc. you use daily it can add up. Again a big congrads on your wonderful new home!:)

Thank you so much for this great advice! Vinegar and baking soda are about the only cleaners I use too!! I'll have to try the grated ivory soap bar though! That's a good idea! I'll also have to make the swags as you suggested with the flat sheets! That's a great idea!! I can't wait to try that one!! Max is one cute kittie!!! I can't wait to actually get everything moved this weekend and be in our new house!! Thanks for all the great advice!!
