Heat Wave
Tuesday, September 04, 2007
There's been a terrible heat wave in S. California (not to mention the fires)...and my husband and I escaped to the beach and our boat over the holiday weekend. It was even hot there one day! We did have a lovely sail and it was great lounging on the boat in the ocean air.
Oooh. The apartment was HOT when we got back. It took all night and all the AC and all the fans to cool it down. (Don't think the roof is insulated very well...) All together I have 8 fans (and 2 air cleaners) set up around this place! (And 2 A/C units) - and it still just brings the temperature down to a reasonable level. We had a brown out last week, and some folks are even without power - so all the lights are off...
You know, I think we got most of those fans used....You can get good deals on them...But the AC units were new...The newest one is a little clip-on fan I have directed right at me in front of my computer screen. And, it does help...
So here I am, in shorts and a tank top, drinking my homemade iced tea - I shudder to think what our electricity bill will be! You never used to suffer from this sort of heat in L.A. - Can we say global warming, boys and girls? I am recycling all my cans and my husband is giving them to the old pensioner downstairs who collects them & turns them in - It assuages my conscience.
At least the sail boat has a light carbon footprint - There are now these huge "stinkpot" motor boats in the marina - and the gas they burn up is incredible. Sad to say, we were downwind of such a large boat's engine idling or warming up over the weekend and got a wave of exhaust fumes. Cough. Wonder when they will regulate THAT.
