Watch those outdoor fires
Monday, March 09, 2009

Two days in a row I burned leaves. Yesterday the wind caught the leaves and sent them burning and flying under the car. We caught the burning leaves in time but, it could have been nasty. We did spray the fire down, killed it dead and we didn't leave until we knew the fire was out.

Last night a friend called to tell us that the hillside was on fire (a few miles away). My husband asked me if I would take a drive with him to see if we could be of some help with food or water for the firefighters. When we got to the scene of the fire, it was so sad. The entire hillside had burnt, and the wind was spreading it rapidly.

I thought of the nearby houses that were in jeopardy. I thought of the sleepless nights for those in close proximity. I thought of all the beautiful trees and wild growth that was destroyed.

It nearly brought me to tears to think of the animals and insects that were either killed or forced to move fast to safety.

My thoughts tonight are that I will not even consider burning outdoors until the windy season is over. I sure don't want guilt of this magnitude. I don't handle guilt well. In fact I am lousy with guilt.

The fireighters finally got the fire under control, so much work, no one injured but those guys had to walk up a very steep mountainside in order to fight the flames. They were amazing.

If you read this blog, please watch your outdoor fires as there is so much at risk if the flames get out of control. Stay safe!

I'm bummed out
Monday, March 09, 2009

After some serious spring cleaning, I busied myself with gathering all the gardening supplies, rake, shovel, seeds... started my green pepper seeds indoors and then looked for my fifth generation tomato seeds and they are gone. No where to be found and I am bummed out.

I will go buy strange (to me) tomato seeds but I won't be too thrilled about it, I want my fifth generation seeds. I feel as if I have lost a dear friend. I know the new tomatoes will taste good and I will count my blessings but, it will forever bug me that my dear friends are gone.

Upon thinking of my lost friends, I have questions... could someone have tossed my dear friends into the garbage? Would my seven year old son have trotted off with them? Or is it that my friends fell into the garbage can while I neglected to discover their absence until today? Whatever the answer is, I failed my friends and I will forever wonder how they left me, and who is responsible for this crime.

Goodbye dear friends I will forever remember your meaty flavor while tossing a salad. I will forever miss you while eating a burger. I will miss you as I slice ham and smear on the Hellmann’s. Goodbye my fifth generation tomato seeds.

Oh the time spent saving you year after year, caring for you, making certain you were drying and safe in my window sill.
